Bangladesh Gripped by Violent Protests Following Death of Student Leader
Dhaka, Bangladesh – Bangladesh is facing a surge of violent protests after the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi, a prominent figure in last year’s uprising against the Sheikh Hasina government, was shot in the head by masked assailants in Dhaka last Friday while campaigning for upcoming elections. He died in a Singapore hospital after six days on life support.
The protests, which began late Thursday, have seen emotionally charged demonstrations invoking Hadi’s name. Mobs have targeted media outlets, vandalizing the offices of leading newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. Both publications suspended their Friday editions due to the unrest.
Tensions remain high in several areas, with increased security forces deployed to prevent further violence. Interim leader Muhammad Yunus has expressed his condolences, calling Hadi’s death an “irreplaceable loss.” Yunus has promised a transparent investigation and urged citizens to remain calm amidst the escalating unrest ahead of national elections.
