Rabat, Morocco – The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set to kick off this Sunday in Morocco, promising a month of thrilling football action. The tournament, originally slated for June, was rescheduled due to a clash with the expanded FIFA Club World Cup and will now be held over the Christmas and New Year period.

Venues and Format:

Morocco will host the tournament across nine venues in six cities: Agadir, Casablanca, Fez, Marrakesh, Rabat, and Tangier. Twenty-four teams are divided into six groups:

Host nation Morocco, currently ranked 11th globally, is also a favorite, aiming for their first title in 50 years with a talented squad and home advantage. Egypt, with Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, Senegal, Tunisia, and Algeria are also considered strong contenders.

Prize Money:

The winner will receive $7 million, while the runner-up will take home $4 million. The total prize pot for the tournament is $32 million.

Controversies:

FIFA’s decision to delay the release of players to their national teams until December 15th, just a week before the tournament, has drawn criticism from coaches, who cite a lack of respect for African football.
