Abhishek Sharma Poised to Shatter Virat Kohli’s T20 Record

[City, State] – [Date] – Rising cricket star Abhishek Sharma is on the cusp of surpassing Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs scored by an Indian batsman in a single calendar year in T20 cricket. Sharma needs only 87 more runs to break Kohli’s 2016 record of 1,614 runs, achieved in 31 matches with an impressive average of 89.66, including four centuries and 14 half-centuries.

This year, Sharma has amassed 1,533 runs in 39 T20 matches, averaging 41.43 with three centuries and nine half-centuries. The left-handed batsman will have his next opportunity to break the record on Sunday, December 14th, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala.

Sharma’s performance in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa has been a mix of brilliance and inconsistency. After a low score in the first T20I in Cuttack, where India still managed a convincing 101-run victory, Sharma showed glimpses of his power-hitting prowess in the second match in New Chandigarh. His quickfire 17 off 8 balls, including two sixes, made him one of the few Indian power hitters to cross 50 sixes in T20 international cricket in a calendar year.

However, his early dismissal contributed to India’s batting collapse as they fell short chasing South Africa’s total of 213, losing the match by 51 runs and leveling the series at 1-1.

As the five-match series continues, India will need consistent contributions from both their top and middle order. Abhishek Sharma’s explosive batting remains a crucial asset for India as they look to secure a series victory.
