Biloxi Police Arrest Woman Suspected of Tampering with Walmart Bakery Items
BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – Biloxi Police have apprehended a Texas woman suspected of placing razor blades and a fishing hook inside bakery items at two local Walmart stores. Camille Benson, 33, was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted mayhem after a tip led investigators to her location in the 1000 block of Division Street.
The arrest follows multiple incidents over the past 11 days where foreign objects were discovered in baked goods at the Walmart Superstore on CT Switzer Sr. Drive and the Neighborhood Market on Pass Road. The incidents began on December 5th when a razor blade was found in a banana nut muffin at the Superstore. Another razor blade was discovered in a loaf of bread at the Neighborhood Market on December 7th.
According to police, the stores initially believed the reports were isolated incidents. However, on Monday, multiple customers reported finding razor blades in loaves of bread purchased at the Superstore, prompting a full investigation.
” [Walmart workers] did another sweep of their merchandise for sale and found multiple loaves of bread that were compromised with razor blades. They also found a muffin with a fishing hook in it,” Lt. Candice Young told WLOX News. “Somebody had poked those items through the plastic packaging.”
Investigators released surveillance photos of Benson exiting a Walmart store around noon on Tuesday, identifying her as a person of interest. By 5 p.m., she was in custody at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center, where she is being held on a $100,000 bond.
“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” said Walmart Corporate in a statement to WLOX News. “We have removed and thoroughly inspected all potentially affected products at impacted stores in Biloxi. We appreciate law enforcement for their swift action and will continue cooperating with them as they investigate.”
No injuries have been reported as a result of the tampering. Police are urging customers who purchased bread or muffins at the affected Biloxi Walmart locations to carefully inspect their purchases for any foreign objects and to contact the Biloxi Police Department if anything is found.
