Statue of Veteran Dalit Leader B. Shankaranand Unveiled in Belagavi
Belagavi, December 18, 2025 – A statue of B. Shankaranand, a former Union minister and respected Dalit leader, was unveiled yesterday in Belagavi. Karnataka’s PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi presided over the ceremony, held near Shankaranand’s former residence on Club Road.
The bronze statue honors Shankaranand’s legacy as a seven-time parliamentary poll winner who inspired a generation of young leaders and fostered a broad base of support. Minister Jarkiholi lauded Shankaranand’s contributions to the region, highlighting his role in establishing a public sector undertaking factory, and promoting the growth of industries, educational institutions, and hospitals. He emphasized Shankaranand’s significant influence within the Congress party, particularly in Northern Karnataka. Jarkiholi also pledged his support for Shankaranand’s family members seeking to enter politics.
KLE Chairperson Prabhakar Kore spoke of Shankaranand’s pivotal role in bringing him into politics and praised his inclusive leadership style, extending help across party lines. He also noted the former minister’s influence at the national level, with the party high command consulting him on Chief Ministerial appointments.
Veeranna Mathakatti, former chairperson of Karnataka Legislative Council, shared how Shankaranand personally supported his election to the Ron Assembly constituency.
Numerous dignitaries, including MLC Prakash Hukkeri, MLA Ganesh Hukkeri, and members of the Shankaranand family, were present at the unveiling. The event served as a testament to Shankaranand’s lasting impact on the region and his enduring legacy as a prominent political figure.
