Netflix’s new series, “Simon Cowell: The Next Act,” is drawing criticism for what some are calling a cynical “bait and switch.” Initially presented as a documentary offering a glimpse into Simon Cowell’s life after “The X Factor,” the show quickly devolves into a rehash of the very talent competition he’s known for, critics claim.

The series follows Cowell as he ostensibly attempts to find the next big boy band, holding auditions, putting contestants through “boot camp,” and making ruthless eliminations. The premise is eerily familiar. One contestant even has sob stories, working at Nando’s, a local restaurant.

Cowell, known for creating One Direction, is said to be envious of the success of K-pop and its manufactured groups. However, critics note that Cowell places himself as the star of the show, with the young contestants almost an afterthought. Some reviews have called the whole production a self-serving vehicle for Cowell to reclaim his fame.
