Renowned Sculptor Ram Sutar Passes Away at 100; Maharashtra Mourns the Loss of a National Treasure
Mumbai, Maharashtra – December 18, 2025 – Padma Shri awardee and celebrated sculptor Ram Sutar passed away peacefully at his Noida residence late Wednesday night at the age of 100. The news of his passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from across India, particularly in Maharashtra, where Sutar’s contributions to art and culture were deeply cherished.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, issued heartfelt condolences, acknowledging Sutar’s profound impact on the world of sculpture. Fadnavis noted that Sutar’s sculptures, known for their proportion and lifelike quality, marked the end of a golden era. The Chief Minister reminisced about recently bestowing the Maharashtra Bhushan award upon Sutar, describing how the centenarian artist moved him by reciting lines from “Maharashtra Majha” during the ceremony.
Sutar was best known for his monumental works, including the Statue of Unity, a towering tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and the statue of V.D. Savarkar at the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Even at 100, he remained actively involved in his craft, contributing to the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar memorial at Indu Mill in Mumbai.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde hailed Sutar as a “Kohinoor of the world of sculpture,” emphasizing his role in elevating Indian culture and the ideals of great leaders onto the global stage through his breathtaking sculptures. Ajit Pawar echoed these sentiments, describing Sutar as the “Bhishmacharya of sculpture,” whose legacy would remain unmatched.
“The country has lost a highly talented sculptor who gave Indian memorial art global recognition,” Pawar stated in his condolence message.
The Maharashtra state government has pledged its support to Sutar’s family. Ram Sutar’s legacy is set to endure, with his sculptures standing as lasting testaments to his artistry and vision.
