Delhi Police Faces Staffing Shortage as Vacancies Exceed 10%
New Delhi – December 18, 2025 – The Delhi Police is currently operating with over 10% of its posts vacant, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) revealed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Responding to a question from Trinamool Congress MP Prakash Chik Baraik, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai stated that the police force has a current strength of 92,044 personnel, with 9,248 vacancies across various ranks, as of November 30th.
While Minister Rai emphasized that filling these vacancies is an ongoing process involving regular reporting to recruitment agencies, he did not address the duration for which these posts have remained unfilled, nor provide a timeline for their replenishment.
The issue of staffing shortages within the Delhi Police is not new. A Public Accounts Committee report from April 2024 highlighted the force’s repeated requests to the MHA for over 50,000 new posts and additional units to address the growing demands on law enforcement in the capital. The MHA has yet to respond to these requests.
