Thu Dec 18 07:08:57 UTC 2025: IndiGo Aims to Rebuild After Flight Cancellation Crisis, External Expert to Investigate

Mumbai, India – December 18, 2025 – IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers addressed employees today, outlining a plan to rebuild the airline following a period of significant operational disruption that left thousands of passengers stranded earlier this month. The airline canceled thousands of flights between December 1st and 9th, citing factors including crew shortages and difficulties adapting to new pilot duty regulations.

In a video message, Elbers emphasized three key priorities: resilience, root cause analysis, and rebuilding. He stated that IndiGo has restored its network to 2,200 flights following the stabilization of operations and attributed the problems to a combination of factors.

To address the underlying causes of the mass cancellations, the IndiGo board has appointed an external aviation expert to conduct a comprehensive root cause analysis. Elbers also announced plans to travel across the network, engaging with employees to understand the challenges they faced during the disruptions.

The airline has faced considerable public criticism over its handling of the crisis, with reports of inadequate passenger support and communication during the cancellations.

In response to the widespread disruption, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already launched an investigation. Furthermore, the government has reduced IndiGo’s current winter schedule by 10%. The focus on resilience, root cause analysis, and rebuilding aims to restore trust in IndiGo’s services after this turbulent period.
