Wed Dec 17 20:15:34 UTC 2025: Tensions Mount Between US and Venezuela: UN Urged to Intervene as Brazil Offers Mediation

New York, NY – As tensions escalate between the United States and Venezuela over oil exports, global leaders are expressing growing concern. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called on the United Nations to actively intervene to prevent a potential conflict, while Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has offered his country’s services as a mediator between the two nations.

The heightened tensions stem from US President Donald Trump’s threat of a complete blockade on oil tankers entering and exiting Venezuela, a move that experts warn could cripple the Venezuelan economy. Trump has also designated Maduro’s government a “foreign terrorist organization” and deployed significant military assets to the Caribbean.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged both countries to de-escalate and adhere to international law. Sheinbaum, however, questioned the UN’s current efforts, stating, “It must assume its role to prevent any bloodshed.”

Lula da Silva voiced his concern about Trump’s approach towards Latin America and offered Brazil’s assistance in facilitating dialogue. “If you are interested in talking on good terms with Venezuela, we can contribute,” Lula said he told Trump.

Trump’s recent actions, including the seizure of an oil tanker and the bombing of maritime vessels as part of an anti-drug campaign, have drawn criticism and accusations of extrajudicial killings from UN experts. The situation remains volatile, with international actors pushing for a peaceful resolution to prevent further escalation.
