Grand Traverse County Awards $500,000 in Marijuana Revenue to Local Nonprofits
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. – Grand Traverse County is investing in its community, awarding $500,000 in adult-use marijuana sales revenue to 13 local non-profit organizations. The decision, made during a recent commission meeting, aims to bolster vital community services across the county.
Among the recipients is the Women’s Resource Center (WRC), which will receive $50,000 to support the operations of Helen’s House, an emergency shelter providing safe haven for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
“Thank you so much for prioritizing survivors of domestic and sexual violence,” said Juliette Schultz, executive director of the WRC. “This grant alone will provide about 357 nights of shelter which is phenomenal.” She explained the funding will bridge the gap between state and federal funding and the actual cost of running the shelter.
The county received over $931,000 in marijuana funds, with the remaining $431,000 earmarked for future facilities projects.
Commissioner Lauren Flynn highlighted the rigorous selection process, noting that the commission sifted through 81 applications before selecting the 13 grantees. Awards range from $20,000 to $80,000, allocated based on a comprehensive scoring matrix.
“It’s wonderful to be able to serve our community and help the ones in need,” Flynn stated. “It’s difficult and hard to see that there’s so much need in our community that’s not being fulfilled. I’m honored to be able to get that money out of those 13.”
