Thu Dec 18 15:46:37 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka to Form Committee to Aid Displaced by Irrigation Projects

BELAGAVI, December 18, 2025 (The Hindu) – The Karnataka government has announced the formation of a committee comprised of both ruling party and opposition leaders to investigate the issues facing individuals displaced by irrigation projects, including the Upper Krishna Project (UKP). Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also holds the Water Resources portfolio, made the announcement in the Legislative Council today in response to concerns raised by Hanumanth Nirani and P.H. Pujar regarding the inadequate rehabilitation of UKP-displaced people.

Nirani and Pujar highlighted the dire conditions in the 146 rehabilitation centers, alleging that only 50% of the targeted land had been irrigated under the UKP and that no officials have visited these centers. They urged the government to address the issue on humanitarian grounds.

“The State government is committed to extending all the required assistance to the project-displaced people,” Shivakumar stated. He emphasized the government’s dedication to both irrigation development and the well-being of those who have sacrificed their land. The committee, which will include senior members from the opposition, will study the situation and propose remedial measures to address the challenges faced by the displaced population. The goal is to ensure adequate rehabilitation and livelihood opportunities for those impacted by the projects.
