India Urged to Embrace Nuclear Power for Green Future at TANENERGY Summit

CHENNAI, December 17, 2025 – India must drastically increase its reliance on nuclear energy to achieve its green energy goals, argued M.K. Narayanan, Former National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of India, at FICCI’s TANENERGY Summit 2025 held in Chennai on Tuesday.

Narayanan called for boosting nuclear’s share of the national energy basket from the current 3-4% to a target of 10-15% initially, and even higher in the future. He pointed to India’s improved access to uranium following the India-US nuclear deal, the availability of domestic thorium resources, and the development of smaller modular reactors as catalysts for a potential “nuclear renaissance.”

“India’s civil nuclear programme is a vital national asset with immense potential for power generation,” Narayanan stated. While acknowledging the need for stringent nuclear security measures, he insisted that these concerns should not prevent India from fully harnessing the benefits of nuclear energy.

The summit, themed ‘Green Energy and Green Manufacturing: Driving Tamil Nadu’s one-trillion dollar growth vision’, also featured A. Sivathanu Pillai, former Chief Controller (R&D), ISRO, and founder-CEO of BrahMos Aerospace, who emphasized the critical need for deploying technologies such as methane reduction, CO₂-to-methanol conversion, green coal concepts, renewable and ocean energy, thermal energy, and zero-emission power plants, particularly within Tamil Nadu. Pillai stressed that effective implementation of these existing technologies is key to achieving sustainable growth.

The event, which included a memento presentation by GSK Velu, chairman, FICCI, underscored the importance of a diversified and technologically advanced approach to achieving India’s green energy targets.
