Record Heatwave Grips San Diego County as Winter Solstice Approaches

San Diego, CA – San Diego County is experiencing a late-season heatwave, with several areas shattering temperature records on Tuesday. Borrego Springs (85°F), Campo (86°F), and Lake Cuyamaca (73°F) all reached record highs, while data from Palomar Mountain was unavailable, leaving a potential record unconfirmed.

The above-average temperatures are expected to continue. “Temperatures away from the coast will be 10 to 20 degrees above average,” reports ABC 10News Meteorologist Megan Parry. While tomorrow’s forecast doesn’t guarantee any broken records, Palomar Mountain (68°) and Campo (80°) may come close, with Borrego Springs also in the running.

However, the warmer temperatures are not the only factor for the region to deal with.

A dense fog advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday from the coast to 10 miles inland. Patchier fog is expected Thursday morning as Santa Ana winds develop. Thursday and Friday are predicted to be the warmest days of the week for most of the county, with coastal and valley areas reaching the 70s and 80s. Inland areas like Ramona and Alpine may see record highs on those days. The mountains and deserts will remain near record levels, with Borrego Springs and Palomar Mountain potentially hitting new highs through the weekend.

A slight cool-down is anticipated over the weekend, but temperatures will still remain 5 to 15 degrees above average inland, with highs in the 60s and 70s.

Despite the unseasonably warm weather, winter is officially arriving. The winter solstice occurs this Sunday at 7:03 a.m. PST. Looking ahead, there are hints of potential rain by Christmas Eve into Christmas Day, and possibly another storm before the end of the year.

Wednesday’s forecast highs are:

  • Coast: 62-73°F
  • Inland: 70-79°F
  • Mountains: 66-80°F
  • Deserts: 82-85°F
