Kyiv, Ukraine – The Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) in Ukraine is now relying on a single external power line to receive electricity, raising concerns about potential safety risks. Russian management at the plant reported on Wednesday that one of the two external power lines was disconnected due to ongoing military activity in the area.
The ZNPP, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, has been a focal point of international concern since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The loss of external power could trigger a reliance on emergency diesel generators, which have a limited capacity and pose a significant challenge to maintaining essential cooling functions needed to prevent a nuclear disaster. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly called for a demilitarized zone around the plant to ensure its safety and security.
