Mangaluru Waste Crisis: Minister Pledges Inspection After MLC’s Urgent Plea
Mangaluru, December 16, 2025 – Facing mounting pressure from local representatives, Karnataka Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh has committed to a joint inspection of the Pachanady waste dumping yard in Mangaluru, following concerns raised by MLC Kishor Kumar Puttur about the city’s escalating waste management crisis.
Speaking at the Legislative Council on Tuesday, Puttur, representing Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, demanded immediate action to address the unmanaged legacy waste, poor waste segregation, and inadequate waste collection plaguing Mangaluru. He pointed to the alarming conditions at the Pachanady dumping yard, where nearly nine lakh tonnes of waste have accumulated, creating a toxic environment and impacting the health of nearby residents.
“Mangaluru is the second economic capital of the State; yet it has fallen to a very poor state in cleanliness,” Puttur stated, expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s current measures. He stressed that the issue transcends political divides and is a matter of public health, human life, and environmental safety.
Minister Suresh responded with a commitment to visit Mangaluru and conduct a joint inspection with local MLAs and MLCs, including Pratap Simha Nayak, Manjunath Bhandary, and Ivan D’Souza, to find a permanent solution. Puttur welcomed the Minister’s promise, emphasizing the need for non-partisan collaboration to address the crisis and ensure clean air and a healthy living environment for the people of Mangaluru.
