Rep. Dan Newhouse, Impeachment Backer, Announces 2026 Retirement

WASHINGTON – Representative Dan Newhouse, a Republican from Washington state who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump in 2021, announced Wednesday that he will not seek re-election in 2026.

“This decision comes with no reservations or remorse, only gratitude for the tremendous opportunity to have represented my home state in Congress,” Newhouse said in a statement. He added that he was grateful to the Washingtonians who put their faith in him, as well as the colleagues he served with.

Newhouse was one of ten House Republicans who voted in favor of Trump’s impeachment following the January 6th Capitol riot. His departure would leave Representative David Valadao of California as potentially the only remaining Republican in the House who voted for impeachment, pending Valadao’s re-election.

Trump had actively campaigned against Newhouse in the 2024 election cycle, calling him a “Weak and Pathetic RINO” and endorsing his primary challenger, Jerrod Sessler, a Navy veteran backed by the House Freedom Caucus. Despite Trump’s efforts, Newhouse secured re-election.

Newhouse emphasized his ability to work with Trump, saying he felt confident he could successfully work with his administration despite the impeachment vote. Newhouse has served over 25 years in public service, including over a decade in the House.
