Teen Sensation Karabo Meso Debuts as Proteas Face Ireland in First ODI

East London, South Africa – Eighteen-year-old Karabo Meso is set to make her ODI debut today as the Proteas take on Ireland at Buffalo Park in East London. Ireland won the toss and elected to bat first in a match that sees South Africa fielding a significantly revamped squad.

The toss was delayed by over an hour due to a damp pitch, prompting grounds staff to employ creative measures, including a coal fire, to dry the playing surface.

The Proteas, under the leadership of Laura Wolvaardt, have made seven changes to the team that contested the World Cup final, showcasing a focus on developing young talent. Meso’s inclusion as wicketkeeper is a highlight, alongside the return of Lara Goodall, Maine Smit, Eliz-Marie Marx, Tumi Sekhukhune and Ayanda Hlubi. Adding experience to the mix, former captain Dane van Niekerk will play her first ODI since 2021.

South Africa is coming off a successful T20I series victory against Ireland, winning the series 2-0.

Teams:

  • South Africa: Laura Wolvaardt (captain), Tazmin Brits, Lara Goodall, Sune Luus, Dane van Niekerk, Miane Smit, Karabo Meso, Eliz-Mari Marx, Tumi Sekhukhune, Ayanda Hlubi, Nonkululeko Mlaba.
