Kolkata Knight Riders Unfazed by BCCI Rule Despite Splashing Big on Cameron Green
Kolkata, India – The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made headlines at the recent IPL mini-auction by acquiring Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for a staggering INR 25.20 crore. While the price tag raised eyebrows, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rule means Green will ultimately be paid INR 18 crore.
The rule, implemented to cap player salaries in mini-auctions, dictates that an overseas player’s auction fee cannot exceed the highest retention price (INR 18 crore) or the highest auction price from the previous mega auction (which was higher than INR 20 crore).
Despite this “price correction,” KKR CEO Venky Mysore downplayed any concerns. “From our standpoint, I don’t think there is any concern in that regard because this is an outflow for the franchise,” Mysore said. “The BCCI has made it with their wisdom on capping it at Rs 18 crores. So, we are okay with that. And I don’t think it changes anything as far as the options are concerned.”
KKR and the Chennai Super Kings engaged in a heated bidding war for Green, with KKR ultimately emerging victorious thanks to their larger remaining purse. Mysore declined to reveal just how far KKR would have been willing to go for the Aussie star, stating that it depended on their overall auction strategy.
“It’s tough to say that. I think a lot of it would have depended on the rest of the plans and what’s happening. But I think we will be getting close, is what I can tell you.”
However, Mysore expressed satisfaction with the purchase. “This is something that we were really focused on and always hoping for,” he said. “We were quite happy with the price that we got.” He added that the team would have been prepared to let Green go if the bidding had become too excessive, potentially hindering their ability to acquire other players.
Mysore also highlighted the positive impact Green could have on the team, especially with the addition of Andre Russell, a new power coach. “I think he adds a lot to our team and especially with our new power coach (Andre Russell) who is on board, I think it’s a very nice thing to have a young one on the field. We know what he does at the international stage with the bat, with the ball, position in which he plays. So, we couldn’t be happier with the new acquisition.”
