Long Beach Woman Detained by ICE During Green Card Interview

Long Beach, CA – Bubbly Kaur, a 60-year-old woman of Indian origin, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on December 1st during what was supposed to be the final step in her green card application process. Kaur, who has resided in the U.S. since 1994, was apprehended at an ICE office following a biometric scan appointment, according to her daughter, Joti.

Kaur has a pending green card petition approved through her other daughter, a U.S. citizen, and her husband, a green card holder. According to Joti, federal agents detained her mother after calling her into a separate room at the ICE office.

After several hours without information, the family learned Kaur had been transferred to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center, a former federal prison.

Bubbly Kaur and her husband were well-known in Long Beach, operating Natraj Cuisine of India and Nepal in Belmont Shore for over two decades. She also worked at the local Rite Aid for 25 years.

Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia, representing Long Beach, is advocating for Kaur’s release. His office has been in contact with federal authorities and is assisting the family with legal filings to potentially secure her release on bond.

Kaur is reportedly being held in a large, noisy dorm-style room at Adelanto, making sleep difficult. Family visits are restricted and often require lengthy waits.

“It’s been a nightmare,” said Joti. “We’re trying anything and everything to get her out. She doesn’t belong there. It’s so inhumane.”
