Flagg’s Historic 42-Point Outburst Overshadowed by Mavericks’ Loss to Jazz

[City, State] – Cooper Flagg etched his name in NBA history books on Monday night, exploding for 42 points against the Utah Jazz. The Dallas Mavericks rookie’s performance marks the highest scoring game by an 18-year-old in league history, surpassing LeBron James’ previous record of 37 points.

Flagg’s stat line included 7 rebounds and 6 assists, making him only the third teenager in NBA history, alongside James and Kevin Durant, to achieve at least 40 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in a single game. He also joins a short list of rookies in the last 15 years to reach that milestone.

Despite the individual accolades, Flagg’s impressive performance was overshadowed by the Mavericks’ 140-133 loss to the Jazz in overtime. Flagg expressed disappointment at the loss, stating, “Obviously, we didn’t win. So it’s tough for me to want to be happy, or any of that, but obviously it’s a success.”

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd praised Flagg’s development, noting, “The more time he spends on the floor, the more he sees, the better he gets. He displayed it all tonight.”

Flagg has been on a tear in recent weeks, averaging 25.7 points in his last seven games. His aggressive play has also led to frequent trips to the free-throw line, where he shot 15-for-20 against Utah.

With Anthony Davis out and other teammates sidelined by injuries, the game offered a glimpse into Flagg’s potential as a centerpiece of the Mavericks’ offense. Teammate PJ Washington commented, “We were going to Coop. He was killing them the whole game, so they finally tried to double him…He’s a special player, so there will be a lot more to come.”

Flagg, despite tying Mark Aguirre for the most points scored by a rookie in Mavs history, remained focused on team improvement. “I’m not really focused on a lot of that stuff [the records]. I’m more just focused on being present, day-to-day, and trying to get better and getting our team as many wins as we can,” he said.
