Kolkata Knight Riders Splurge on Cameron Green, Making Him Most Expensive Foreign Player in IPL History

Abu Dhabi, UAE – December 16, 2024 – In a stunning turn of events at today’s Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction held in Abu Dhabi, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured the services of Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for a staggering ₹25.20 crore (approximately $3 million USD). This acquisition makes Green the most expensive foreign player in IPL history, surpassing fellow Australian Mitchell Starc’s previous record of ₹24.75 crore from the 2024 auction.

The auction, which kicked off this afternoon, marks the lead-up to the 19th season of the IPL, scheduled to run from March to May next year. 369 players had registered for the auction. KKR entered the auction with a substantial purse of ₹64.30 crore, while the Mumbai Indians had the least with ₹2.75 crore.

The first round of bidding saw New Zealand’s Devon Conway, Australians Jake Fraser-McGurk and Cameron Green, and South Africa’s David Miller listed with a base price of ₹2 crore. Indian players Sarfaraz Khan and Prithvi Shaw were listed at ₹75 lakh.

The bidding war for Green was intense, with Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals initially competing fiercely, reaching ₹10 crore. KKR then entered the fray, and after the price exceeded ₹14 crore, Chennai Super Kings joined the bidding. Ultimately, KKR prevailed, securing Green for the record-breaking sum.

Several players, including Jake Fraser-McGurk, David Miller, Prithvi Shaw and Devon Conway were unsold in the initial rounds of bidding. However, the Delhi Capitals later acquired David Miller at his base price.

With this acquisition, KKR has signaled its intent to make a strong run in the upcoming IPL season. It remains to be seen how Green will perform under the pressure of such a high price tag.
