Renowned Malayalam Writer M. Raghavan Passes Away at 95

Kozhikode, India – December 15, 2025 – M. Raghavan, a celebrated figure in Malayalam literature, passed away early Monday morning in Mahe at the age of 95.

Raghavan was best known for his impactful short stories including ‘Nanavu’, ‘Vadhu’, ‘September Akaleyalla’ and ‘Iniyumethra Kaatham’, and novels such as ‘Nankis’, ‘Avan’, ‘Yathra Parayathe’ and ‘Chithariya Chithrangal’. He also contributed significantly to Malayalam theatre with plays like ‘Karkkidakam’ and ‘Chathurangam’, and translated Helen Cixous’s play Dora into Malayalam under the title Dorayude Katha. He is the elder brother of writer M. Mukundan.

Born in Mahe in 1930, Raghavan spent many years working for the French government, first at the French consulate in Mumbai and later at the French Embassy in Delhi, where he retired as the Secretary of Cultural Affairs in 1983.

His contributions to Malayalam literature were widely recognized. He was the recipient of the Malayala Ratnam award from the Puducherry government, the Vaikom Mohammed Basheer award from the State Institute of Languages in 2008, and the Abu Dhabi Shakti award.
