Hoosiers’ Mendoza Wins Heisman Amid Controversy

NEW YORK, NY – Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been awarded the 2025 Heisman Trophy, capping off a stellar season that saw him lead his team to a Big Ten Championship and a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff. However, the victory wasn’t without its share of drama.

Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia, a Heisman finalist himself, initially expressed his dissatisfaction with the voting results. In a since-deleted Instagram story, Pavia posted a message with a thumbs-down emoji aimed at the voters.

Pavia ultimately finished second in the voting, receiving 189 first-place votes compared to Mendoza’s impressive 643.

However, Pavia has since issued an apology via X, stating, “I didn’t handle those emotions well at all and did not represent myself the way I wanted to. I have much love and respect for the Heisman voters and the selection process, and I apologize for being disrespectful…Fernando Mendoza is an elite competitor and a deserving winner of the award.”

Mendoza’s impressive stats include 2,980 passing yards, a Big Ten-leading 33 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. Pavia, meanwhile, boasted a league-leading 71.2% completion rate, 27 touchdowns, and 3,192 passing yards.

Despite Pavia’s initial frustration, Mendoza is now set to lead the undefeated Hoosiers in the College Football Playoff, and Pavia will prepare to compete in the upcoming ReliaQuest Bowl.
