Chennai, India – December 15, 2025 – The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is planning to bring back double-decker buses to Chennai, this time with a focus on electric power. Switch Mobility, the electric mobility arm of Ashok Leyland, has begun testing electric double-decker buses on city streets.

According to a senior MTC official, the re-introduction of double-decker buses in an electric format follows the successful operation of existing electric buses. The pilot project aims to procure approximately 20 electric double-decker buses. Tenders for the purchase are yet to be announced.

OHM Global Mobility, another subsidiary of Ashok Leyland, currently operates the existing fleet of electric buses for the MTC under a gross cost contract basis. The move to electric double-decker buses signifies a commitment to sustainable transportation within the city.
