Sydney, Australia – A devastating mass shooting at Bondi Beach during a Jewish celebration has left at least 15 people dead and dozens injured. Police have identified the gunmen as Sajid Akram, 50, and his son, Naveed Akram, 24. Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police, while Naveed Akram is in custody and receiving hospital treatment for his injuries.
The attack occurred during a “Chanukah by the Sea” event, sending hundreds fleeing in terror. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the two men opened fire with what appeared to be a bolt-action rifle and a shotgun.
The Akrams are believed to be of Pakistani origin. The son, Naveed, is an Australian citizen by birth, while the father arrived in Australia in 1998 on a student visa before obtaining a partner visa and later resident return visas.
The incident marks the deadliest shooting in Australia in nearly three decades, a nation known for its strict gun control laws. The attack has been widely condemned as an act of antisemitism and terrorism.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited the site, laying flowers and expressing solidarity with the Jewish community. World leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, have offered their condolences and support.
A bystander, identified as Ahmed al Ahmed, is being hailed as a hero after he tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen.
Authorities are investigating the motives behind the attack and have raided the attackers’ home. The victims ranged in age from 10 to 87. The incident is the latest in a series of antisemitic acts in Australia since the start of the Israel-Gaza conflict.
