Waterbury Faces Days Without Full Service After Major Water Main Break; Boil Water Order Issued
WATERBURY, CT – Waterbury residents face several more days of disruptions after a significant water main break on Thomaston Avenue caused widespread outages across the city and surrounding towns. The damage to a 36-inch transmission main, which failed Friday night after being weakened by an earlier break on Wednesday, is “much worse than expected,” according to Mayor Paul Pernerewski.
“Crews were finally able to get underground and assess the damage,” the Mayor stated in a Sunday news conference. While water service has been restored to some areas, including downtown and Bunker Hill, full restoration is not expected for days.
The outage has prompted a boil water advisory for Waterbury, as well as parts of Watertown, Wolcott, and Prospect. Restaurants in the affected areas have been ordered to cease food preparation and service until the order is lifted. The Connecticut Department of Public Health will need to test the water supply after repairs are completed to ensure it’s safe for consumption.
Waterbury Hospital and Saint Mary’s Hospital are being fully supplied and remain fully operational. However, schools in Waterbury and Wolcott will be closed on Monday, with the possibility of further closures throughout the week.
City Water Superintendent Brad Malay said crews are developing a plan to create a new section of main that will divert water to the city, though the timeline for completion remains uncertain.
In the meantime, potable water distribution is underway at Municipal Stadium and Crosby High School from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with assistance from local volunteers.
Despite the inconvenience, residents like Katherine Aquino expressed gratitude for the city’s response. “I’m really appreciative with what’s going on and giving out the water,” she said.
