Mon Dec 15 08:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Scorchers Sizzle in Rain-Affected Opener, Connolly Shines as Azam Flops

Perth, Australia – Cooper Connolly’s explosive half-century powered the Perth Scorchers to a five-wicket victory over the Sydney Sixers in a rain-soaked, shortened season opener of the KFC BBL|15 at Optus Stadium on Sunday.

The match was reduced to 11 overs per side after lightning and heavy rain delayed the start by 80 minutes and drenched the pitch. The Sixers, after winning the toss, managed to post 5-113, thanks largely to a blistering unbeaten 46 off 21 balls from Jack Edwards, who dragged the team from a dire 4-41. Josh Philippe contributed with 28 off 18 balls.

However, the highly anticipated debut of Pakistan superstar Babar Azam proved a damp squib. Azam struggled to find his rhythm, edging close to dismissal twice before gifting his wicket to Brody Couch for a disappointing two runs.

The Scorchers, undeterred by the conditions, chased the target with just five balls to spare. Connolly, the reigning BBL player of the tournament (joint with Glenn Maxwell), delivered a match-winning performance, smashing 59 off just 31 balls, including five towering sixes and three boundaries. His aggressive innings kept the Scorchers ahead of the required run rate and ensured a comfortable victory, despite his late dismissal with only nine runs needed.

While the stadium lights flickered amidst the lingering storm, the 26,823 fans in attendance celebrated the Scorchers’ triumphant start to the season. Connolly’s heroics have set the tone for another exciting Big Bash League campaign, while Azam will be looking to bounce back quickly from his underwhelming debut.
