Providence, RI – December 14, 2025 – A shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, has left two students dead and nine others wounded. A “person of interest” is currently in police custody, according to Providence officials. The incident prompted a campus-wide shelter-in-place order on Saturday, which has since been lifted.

The shooting occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, in the Barus & Holley engineering building, where students were taking exams. According to reports, the gunman entered the building and opened fire. The outer doors had been unlocked at the time of the shooting.

Over 400 law enforcement personnel were deployed to the scene on Saturday as authorities searched for the suspect. The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting local and state police in the investigation. A video of the suspect, described as a male in his 30s dressed in black, has been released by officials.

Police are investigating why the engineering building was targeted. Brown University President Christina Paxson stated that the victims were mostly students. Seven of the wounded remain in critical condition.

The incident has sparked renewed debate about gun violence in the United States, where mass shootings are relatively common compared to other developed nations. The Gun Violence Archive reports 389 mass shootings in the U.S. this year alone, with six occurring at schools.

Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee vowed to bring the shooter to justice. President Trump addressed the nation on Saturday, calling the incident “terrible.”

Parts of the Brown University campus remain restricted as police continue their investigation. The identity of the “person of interest” and the motive for the shooting remain unknown.
