Mon Dec 15 09:54:30 UTC 2025: ## Morocco Reels as Flash Floods Kill Dozens in Safi

Safi, Morocco – At least 37 people have died and several more injured after torrential rains triggered devastating flash floods in the Atlantic coastal province of Safi on Sunday, according to Moroccan authorities. The sudden downpour, lasting just one hour, inundated the historic old city, flooding at least 70 homes and businesses.

Images circulating on social media depict streets transformed into raging rivers of muddy water, sweeping away cars and debris. Residents described a scene of chaos and destruction as the deluge overwhelmed the city.

“We’re still searching for possible casualties,” a government official stated. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities say they are taking measures to secure affected areas and provide support to residents. One resident questioned the slow response of government services in pumping out the floodwaters.

The heavy rain has also caused significant damage to infrastructure, with several roads leading to and from the port city cut off. Schools in the Safi province were closed on Monday as a safety precaution.

While the water level receded by Sunday evening, residents are now faced with the daunting task of clearing mud and salvaging what they can from the wreckage.

The Moroccan weather service is forecasting more heavy rain across the country on Tuesday, raising concerns about further flooding and potential landslides. The country is currently experiencing a period of heavy rain and snowfall in the Atlas Mountains, following seven years of severe drought that has depleted water reserves. Morocco experienced its hottest year on record in 2024, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology.

This recent disaster follows the collapse of two buildings in Fes last week, which resulted in 19 deaths and 16 injuries, further compounding the nation’s grief.
