Southern Railway Invests ₹65 Crore in Tiruchi-Dindigul Rail Safety After Cattle Run-Over Spike

TIRUCHI, India – December 14, 2025 – Southern Railway announced a significant investment of ₹65 crore to enhance safety along the heavily trafficked Tiruchi-Dindigul broad gauge section following a rise in cattle run-over incidents in the past three years. The project aims to drastically reduce these occurrences, which pose a threat to railway safety, impact train punctuality, and cause financial hardship for livestock owners.

The project, overseen by the Madurai Railway Division, will involve the construction of both metal fencing and boundary walls along identified vulnerable stretches of the 85+ km electrified section. A tender has already been floated for work on the Tiruchi-Manapparai-Ayyalur stretch.

“The safety of passengers and livestock is our priority,” said a railway source. “These measures are crucial for mitigating the risks associated with cattle intrusions onto the tracks.”

The W-beam type metal fencing will cover 73.60 km, while a boundary wall constructed with prestressed precast panels, precast columns, and precast RCC foundations will span 46.4 km. According to railway officials, a total of 13 cattle were struck by trains between 2022 and November 2025, on various sections of the Tiruchi-Dindigul Line.

Major express trains like the Pandian, Vaigai, and Vande Bharat, as well as inter-state trains such as the Chennai-Kollam Ananthapuri Express, and Chennai-Guruvayur Express, utilize the Tiruchi-Dindigul line. The project is expected to improve the safety of these trains, freight trains that operate along the lines, and reduce the potential for service disruption.

The project is slated for completion within 24 months.
