‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Season 2 Returns with More Mature Stakes and Stellar Performances
Disney+’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” has returned for its second season, and it’s showing significant growth alongside its young stars. The first two episodes, “I Play Dodgeball With Cannibals” and “Demon Pigeons Attack,” showcase a series that has matured beyond its whimsical first season, embracing deeper themes and higher stakes.
The leads – Walker Scobell as Percy, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover – deliver stellar performances, demonstrating a newfound depth in their acting. Season 2 adapts Rick Riordan’s “The Sea of Monsters,” following Percy and his friends on a quest to the Bermuda Triangle to find a golden fleece and protect Camp Half-Blood.
New additions to the cast, including Timothy Simons, Daniel Diemer, and cameos from Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal, and Margaret Cho, enrich the already compelling ensemble. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jason Mantzoukas reprise their roles as Hermes and Dionysus, respectively.
The show’s action sequences, production design, and visual effects have been amplified, offering impressive set pieces such as a chariot race filled with monsters and age-appropriate violence. While the pacing may occasionally feel slow and the mythology heavy plot points can be clumsily handled, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” embraces its identity as an entertaining and educational family show.
Season 2 of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is not aiming for high art, but it succeeds in creating a rich and engaging world that families can enjoy together. New episodes premiere each Wednesday on Disney+.
