Sun Dec 14 16:50:00 UTC 2025: Patriots Show Overwhelming Support for Tavai After Tragedy
FOXBOROUGH, MA – The New England Patriots rallied around linebacker Jahlani Tavai after he and his partner, Kalei Mau, experienced an unimaginable loss. Mau, six months pregnant with the couple’s second child, suffered a rare blood infection that led to a medically induced coma. Tragically, their unborn daughter, Ka ua, passed away.
During the Patriots’ game against the Bengals on Nov. 23, the team showed their support for Tavai in several ways. Before the game, the team prayed. Tight end Hunter Henry dedicated his second-quarter touchdown to Tavai, saying “That’s for you, Lani” into a television camera after spiking the football. After their 26-20 victory, teammates FaceTimed Tavai from the locker room.
“We just wanted him to know how much we love him, how much we care for him, and how much we care for everything he’s got going on,” Henry said, emphasizing the brotherhood within the team.
Mau shared details of the tragedy on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the care she received at Massachusetts General Hospital and the support from the Patriots organization.
Tavai returned to the field for the Monday night game against the Giants, where he was named team captain by Coach Mike Vrabel. Tavai also had the honor of breaking down the huddle following the team’s 33-15 win.
“These guys have built a bond that I want to try to just help nurture and help grow throughout the team,” Vrabel said.
The outpouring of support highlights the close-knit culture within the Patriots organization. Owner Robert Kraft emphasized the importance of caring for one another, and players echoed the sentiment, describing the team as a family. Cornerback Carlton Davis said FaceTiming Tavai after the win “was everything for us. That’s what it’s all about.”
When Tavai broke down a week later, he expressed gratitude saying “I love the brotherhood in here…I love you guys and appreciate you guys.”
