Madhya Pradesh to Open Third Cheetah Habitat by Next Monsoon
Bhopal, December 14, 2025 – Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced plans to establish Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve as a new home for cheetahs in the state before the next monsoon season. This initiative follows the successful translocation of cheetahs from Africa to Kuno National Park (KNP) and Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary.
The state cabinet has approved the development of Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, located in Sagar district, as the third cheetah habitat. According to CM Yadav, the state aims to expand its cheetah population and has already released three cheetahs in the Gandhi Sagar Tiger Reserve with potential for 50. KNP currently houses 28 cheetahs, and Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary has two. Additionally, eight cheetahs are expected to arrive at KNP from Botswana in January 2026.
Addressing concerns about tiger deaths, Yadav attributed them to a growing tiger population and emphasized the government’s efforts to minimize such incidents and facilitate wildlife exchange with other states. He also highlighted plans to translocate other species, including rhinoceroses from Assam and king cobras from Bengaluru, along with the establishment of snake parks, rescue centers, and zoos.
Regarding the government’s commitment to doubling farmers’ income, Yadav outlined strategies such as expanding irrigation, promoting multiple cropping, boosting milk and fruit production, and encouraging small-scale cottage industries. The “Ek Bagiya Maa Ke Naam” campaign aims to develop cluster-based fruit orchards to benefit farmers, while free electricity through solar energy is also being provided.
Responding to NCRB data on atrocities against ST/SC communities, Yadav refuted the claims and emphasized the government’s welfare schemes and equal treatment for all sections of society.
