Coimbatore’s Semmozhi Poonga Proves Popular, Overwhelming Traffic on Dr. Nanjappa Road
COIMBATORE, India – December 14, 2025 – Coimbatore’s newly opened Semmozhi Poonga park is proving to be a major draw, but its popularity is causing significant traffic congestion on Dr. Nanjappa Road. Since the park opened to the public on December 11th, following its inauguration by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on November 25th, the road has experienced near gridlock conditions, particularly on weekends.
The issue stems from the sheer number of visitors vying for parking, compounded by illegal parking of two-wheelers outside the park. Motorists and bus crews are struggling to navigate the stretch between Gandhipuram bus stand and Park Gate junction. On Sunday alone, a staggering 27,400 people visited the park, according to Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran.
While the park boasts ample parking, accommodating 1,000 two-wheelers, 453 cars, and 10 buses, officials say people halting vehicles on the road, is the main cause of the problems. However, District Road Safety Committee member K. Kathirmathiyon raised concerns in 2024 about the positioning of the parking area near the narrowest part of Dr. Nanjappa Road, suggesting the road simply isn’t equipped to handle the influx of visitors.
Kathirmathiyon recommends the Corporation implement digital displays informing motorists about parking availability, starting from the Gandhipuram bus stand. Prabakaran stated that the issue has been raised with traffic police to prevent motorists from parking on the road.
