Delhi Chokes Under ‘Severe’ Air Quality as Pollution Reaches 459
New Delhi, December 14, 2025: Residents of Delhi awoke on Sunday to a thick blanket of smog as the city’s air quality plummeted into the ‘severe’ category, reaching a concerning level of 459 on the Air Quality Index (AQI), according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The hazardous air quality has prompted immediate action from authorities. The Delhi Directorate of Education has ordered all schools to conduct classes in a hybrid mode for students up to Class IX and XI. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has also invoked Stage-IV actions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to curb further deterioration of air pollution levels in Delhi-NCR.
The CPCB categorizes an AQI between 401 and 500 as ‘severe’, indicating conditions that pose a significant risk to public health.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the minimum temperature at 8.2 degrees Celsius, slightly below the seasonal average, with a maximum temperature expected around 24 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity was recorded at 100% at 8:30 am.
The deteriorating air quality continues to be a major concern for the city’s residents.
