Sat Dec 13 00:40:00 UTC 2025: Hughes Traded to Wild in Blockbuster Deal; Canucks Receive Rossi, Buium, Ohgren, and a First-Round Pick

Minneapolis, MN – In a stunning move that has sent shockwaves through the NHL, the Vancouver Canucks have traded star defenseman Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. The deal, confirmed late Friday by multiple sources, sees the Canucks receive center Marco Rossi, defenseman Zeev Buium, winger Liam Ohgren, and a 2026 first-round draft pick in return.

The Wild acquire a premier defenseman in Hughes, a former Norris Trophy winner (2023) who is widely regarded as one of the league’s top players at his position. The 26-year-old is currently logging a career-high 27:26 of ice time per night for Vancouver, with 2 goals and 21 assists in 26 games this season.

“Adding Quinn will bolster our back end to a new level and give us an elite skater and puck mover to pair with some of the strong defenseman we already have.” said Wild GM Bill Guerin in a press conference Friday night.

This acquisition comes at a crucial time for the Wild, who currently sit third in the competitive Central Division. Hughes is under contract for two more seasons at a team-friendly $7.85 million AAV, and the Wild will likely attempt to extend his contract, even with new CBA regulations coming next fall.

For the Canucks, the trade marks the beginning of a significant roster retool. The team, currently sitting at the bottom of the league standings, is looking to rebuild for the future. Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, and Liam Ohgren all represent high-potential prospects for Vancouver, while the first-round pick provides additional draft capital.
