UDF Dominates Ernakulam Local Body Elections, LDF Suffers Setback

KOCHI – The United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Congress party, has emerged as the clear winner in the Ernakulam district local body elections, according to results announced late this evening. The UDF has significantly increased its presence across the district’s three-tier panchayat system compared to the 2020 polls, signaling a strengthening of its influence at the grassroots level.

The UDF achieved a landslide victory in the Ernakulam district panchayat, securing 25 out of 28 seats. The Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the CPI(M), suffered a major setback, seeing its representation dwindle from nine seats to just three.

The UDF’s dominance extends to the block panchayats, where it now controls 12 out of 14, a marked improvement from its previous tally of six. The LDF managed to retain only one block panchayat.

In the grama panchayats, the UDF emerged as the leading front in 75 out of 82. While the UDF seems to hold a clear majority in 58 panchayats, the outcome in 19 remains uncertain, with independent candidates likely to play a decisive role. Twenty20 retained two Grama Panchayats.

The BJP, despite a vigorous campaign, failed to make significant inroads into the grama panchayats, securing wins in just 51 wards across the district.

The results indicate a significant shift in the political landscape of Ernakulam, with the UDF regaining considerable ground and the LDF facing a substantial setback. The outcome is expected to have far-reaching implications for state politics.
