Gandhi Vadra Slams Potential MGNREGA Renaming as Wasteful and Unnecessary
NEW DELHI, December 13, 2025 – Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has criticized reports suggesting the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is set to be renamed the “Pujya Bapu Rural Employment Scheme.” Speaking to reporters today, Gandhi Vadra argued that renaming the program would be a costly and pointless exercise, diverting government resources without any discernible benefit.
“I can’t understand the rationale behind this,” she stated. “Changing Mahatma Gandhi’s name will require reprinting everything, from office signs to stationery. It’s a big, costly process. What’s the benefit of doing this unnecessarily?”
Gandhi Vadra’s comments follow similar criticisms leveled by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who earlier today described the potential name change as a “distraction” designed to mislead the public and disrespect the legacy of the Gandhi family. Chaturvedi suggested the move was motivated by “frustration” and an attempt to divert attention from other issues.
MGNREGA, a crucial employment scheme under the Ministry of Rural Development, guarantees at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household where adult members volunteer for unskilled work. The program covers the entire country, excluding districts with a completely urban population, and ensures wages are deposited directly into beneficiaries’ bank or post office accounts within a fortnight.
