Sat Dec 13 07:57:22 UTC 2025: Malappuram Overwhelmingly Backs UDF in 2025 Local Body Polls
Malappuram, Kerala – December 13, 2025 – The United Democratic Front (UDF) has achieved a resounding victory in the Malappuram district’s local body elections, decimating the Left Democratic Front (LDF) across all levels of governance. The results, announced today, showcase the UDF’s strongest performance to date in the region.
The UDF secured victory in 11 out of 12 municipalities, winning Perinthalmanna and Nilambur municipalities from LDF, and retaining Kondotty, Malappuram, Manjeri, Kottakkal, Parappanangadi, Tanur, Tirur, Tirurangadi and Valanchery municipalities. They also claimed 84 of the 94 grama panchayats, 14 of the 15 block panchayats, and 31 of the 33 district panchayat council seats. The LDF managed to win Ponnani municipality.
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key component of the UDF, showcased an exceptional performance in the panchayat elections. However, in Ponmundam panchayat, a joint opposition front successfully ousted the IUML, highlighting local challenges for the party.
While the UDF dominated the district, the LDF managed to retain control of Edapal, Elamkulam, Nannamukku, Niramarathur, Perumpadappu and Veliyamkode grama panchayats.
Vettom, Vazhayur and Alamkode grama panchayats remain hung, with no clear majority for either front. Similarly, the Ponnani block panchayat is also facing a deadlock.
The UDF’s landslide victory in Malappuram district marks a significant shift in local power dynamics and positions the coalition as a dominant force in the region.
