Tri-State Area Braces for First Widespread Snowfall of the Season

NEW YORK, NY – New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area are preparing for the first widespread snowfall of the season, as a clipper system moves in and draws in Atlantic moisture. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for New York City, Long Island, and parts of New Jersey, effective Saturday night into Sunday.

Snow is expected to begin late Saturday night, around 10-11 p.m., and continue into early Sunday morning. Accumulation is forecasted to average 1-3 inches across the Tri-State area, with potentially heavier totals of up to 3 inches or more south and east of New York City, including Suffolk, Ocean, and Monmouth counties. Lighter amounts are expected north and west of I-287.

While the snowfall is considered modest, officials warn of slippery roads and potential disruptions at airports due to de-icing operations. The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has issued a Snow Alert, the department’s highest level snow-fighting notification, beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday and running through 2 p.m. Sunday. DSNY crews have already begun highway brining operations in an effort to reduce accumulations on roadways.

“This is the first significant snowfall of the season, and we want to make sure everyone is prepared,” said a DSNY spokesperson. “We encourage residents to take extra precautions while traveling and allow for additional travel time.”

The public can find updated winter weather information and details about the City’s response at nyc.gov/snow or by calling 311.

Conditions are expected to clear by Sunday afternoon, although temperatures will remain below freezing. High pressure returns Monday, bringing bright but frigid weather with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s. A gradual warm-up is anticipated midweek, with temperatures reaching near 50 by Thursday.
