NEW DELHI – December 13, 2025 – Delhi University has announced the establishment of a Centre for Odia Studies under the Faculty of Arts, marking a significant step towards promoting the rich language, literature, and culture of Odisha. The decision, made during an Executive Council meeting on Friday, aims to broaden the academic discourse and research opportunities surrounding Odia civilization and customs.

The Centre will initially offer a two-year MA program in Odia, with plans to develop a one-year postgraduate program based on future demand. According to a university statement, the Centre intends to offer certificate, diploma, and postgraduate programs, along with a generic elective in Odia Studies at the undergraduate level through the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022. This initiative seeks to popularize the Odia language, literature, and culture within a contemporary and relevant perspective.

The curriculum will delve into the historical evolution of Odia language, literature, art, architecture, dance, traditions, philosophical practices, reform movements, folklore, and oral traditions. The university emphasized its commitment to providing a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted aspects of Odia heritage.

In other news from the Executive Council meeting, the administration announced the renaming of a renovated convention hall to ‘Vande Mataram Hall.’ Furthermore, the council approved a budget of ₹1,651.42 crore for the financial year 2026-2027. The university also proposed utilizing 3.7 acres of vacant land in the Dhaka Complex for the construction of a new girls’ hostel.
