Bengals Cut Ties with Troubled Receiver Jermaine Burton After String of Misconduct

CINCINNATI, OH – The Cincinnati Bengals have released wide receiver Jermaine Burton, just months after selecting him in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, head coach Zac Taylor announced Monday.

The move comes after Burton was suspended for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills due to a series of behavioral issues, culminating in what sources described as the “final straw.” Burton did not travel with the team to Buffalo.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported the news on X, stating the suspension preceded the release of Burton, who now will be subject to waivers.

While Burton’s raw talent was undeniable and a key factor in the Bengals’ initial investment, the behavioral concerns that plagued him coming out of the University of Alabama and contributed to his draft stock falling appear to have resurfaced.

“Burton’s talent is evident, but the issues that were flagged coming out of college, and that caused him to fall in the draft, have caught up with him and left him without a job,” noted The Sporting News.

The Bengals are now moving forward without Burton, and it remains to be seen if another NFL team will take a chance on the talented but troubled receiver. While another team is expected to offer Burton a spot, he will need to mature to get his career back on track.
