Kyiv, Ukraine – December 8, 2025 (IST): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described recent discussions with U.S. representatives regarding a potential peace plan for Ukraine as “constructive, although not easy” on Sunday. The announcement comes ahead of planned consultations with European leaders in London and Brussels.
Mr. Zelenskyy held a call on Saturday, December 7th, with Steve Witkoff, special envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, and Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. He is scheduled to meet with leaders from France, Britain, and Germany in London on Monday, with further talks planned in Brussels.
“The American representatives know the basic Ukrainian positions,” Mr. Zelenskyy stated in his nightly video address.
Trump has repeatedly highlighted the ongoing war in Ukraine, now nearing its fourth year, as his most pressing foreign policy challenge. Despite U.S. mediation efforts, progress in peace negotiations has been slow. Key sticking points remain security guarantees for Kyiv and the final status of Russian-occupied territories.
While Moscow claims to be open to negotiation and accuses Kyiv and the West of stalling the process, Ukraine and its allies maintain that Russia is using diplomacy to consolidate its gains.
European leaders advocate for a phased diplomatic approach to Ukraine, supported by long-term security guarantees and ongoing military assistance. President Trump’s administration, however, has prioritized a swift deal and burden-sharing, raising concerns among diplomats about the stability of the talks and their vulnerability to shifts in U.S. domestic politics.
