New Delhi, December 8, 2025 – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in New Delhi yesterday, marking the first time India has hosted the prestigious event.

In his address at the Red Fort complex, Jaishankar emphasized the growing multi-polarity of the world and the need for deeper multilateralism, calling for cultural rebalancing to correct the imbalances of the past. “The world is indeed becoming more multi-polar, which makes a compelling case for deeper multilateralism, and collectively, prosperity can only come through mutual respect and understanding,” he stated.

He cautioned against cultural assertion and dominance, highlighting the importance of nurturing and passing on cultural inheritance to future generations. Jaishankar also underlined India’s commitment to preserving its own diverse cultural heritage, citing initiatives such as the Kumbh Mela, Durga Puja, and support for local artisans through the “One District One Product” program.

The UNESCO session, running from December 8-13, will examine nominations for inscription on the UNESCO ICH lists, review existing elements, and provide international assistance for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. The event features thematic galleries and performing arts showcasing India’s rich cultural tapestry.

UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and India’s Ambassador to UNESCO Vishal V Sharma attended the opening ceremony.
