Indian-Origin Man Found Guilty of 2018 Beach Murder in Australia
Cairns, Australia – Rajwinder Singh, an Indian-origin former nurse, has been convicted of the 2018 murder of Australian woman, Toyah Cordingley. Cordingley’s body was found partially buried on Wangetti Beach, north of Cairns, on October 22, 2018.
The prosecution argued that Singh, who was allegedly carrying fruit and a kitchen knife, encountered Cordingley, a pharmacy worker walking her dog, after a fight with his wife. A confrontation ensued when Cordingley’s dog barked at Singh, leading to an argument during which Singh stabbed her and buried her body. He also tied her dog to a nearby tree.
Singh fled Australia two days after the murder, abandoning his family and job. He remained a fugitive for four years. Police quickly identified Singh as a suspect, matching his car’s movements with Cordingley’s phone location. A $1 million reward was offered by Queensland Police for information leading to his arrest.
He was apprehended in Delhi, India, in November 2022 and extradited to Australia in 2023.
During the verdict reading in the Cairns Supreme Court, Cordingley’s father reportedly yelled at Singh, “Rot in hell, you bas****.” Singh remained composed.
The trial, which faced delays and the removal of a juror due to allegations of bias, concluded with the guilty verdict. The court will now hear arguments on sentencing on Tuesday.
