Los Angeles, CA – Netflix is standing by its newly released documentary, “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” following accusations from a spokesperson for the jailed Sean “Diddy” Combs that the four-part series is a “shameful hit piece.” The documentary, which explores Combs’ rise to power in the hip-hop industry and delves into various allegations against him, features previously unseen footage leading up to his arrest on prostitution-related charges in July.
Combs’ spokesperson claims Netflix illegally used private recordings, including conversations with his lawyers, and decried the platform’s decision to give “creative control” to Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, a longtime adversary of Combs, calling it a “deeply personal affront.”
Netflix refuted these claims, stating the project has no ties to prior conversations and all footage was “legally obtained.” They further emphasized that while 50 Cent is an executive producer, he does not have creative control. “This is not a hit piece or an act of retribution,” a Netflix spokesperson stated.
The documentary includes footage of Combs discussing his legal strategy with his attorney and speaking to his son about the charges. It also revisits long-standing allegations surrounding Combs, including claims of involvement in the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, based on a police interview with a former gang member, and accusations of violence and abuse, including allegations from his ex-girlfriend Cassie, which were previously settled. Combs has consistently denied these allegations.
Director Alexandria Stapleton defended the documentary’s legitimacy, stating the footage “came to us, we obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights.”
The release of “Sean Combs: The Reckoning” has reignited the long-standing feud between Combs and 50 Cent, with the latter stating that his involvement was necessary to hold Combs accountable. The documentary is currently available on Netflix.
