Gambhir Backs Harshit Rana as Potential All-Rounder for 2027 World Cup
[City, Date] – India head coach Gautam Gambhir has publicly voiced his support for young pacer Harshit Rana, citing the bowler’s potential as a batting all-rounder as a key factor in his selection and development. The announcement follows India’s recent ODI series win against South Africa.
Gambhir, who previously worked with Rana at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), emphasized the importance of finding a No. 8 batsman who can contribute with both bat and ball, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa on the horizon. He envisions Rana as a long-term solution in that role.
“We are trying to probably develop someone like Harshit, who can actually bat at 8 and contribute with a bat at No. 8,” Gambhir stated in a post-match press conference. He highlighted the need for three strong seamers in South African conditions and believes Rana, if he continues to develop, can provide valuable balance to the team.
Gambhir also acknowledged the relative inexperience of bowlers like Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna in the ODI format, but stressed the importance of giving them opportunities to gain experience. Veterans Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj remained sidelined.
“All these three guys do not have a lot of experience under their belts, especially in the 50-over format… but they’ve done a fabulous job,” Gambhir said.
Rana’s first-class record showcases his batting potential, with an average of 31.18 in 14 matches, including one century and two half-centuries. Gambhir’s statements indicate a clear plan to nurture Rana’s all-round abilities as India prepares for the challenges ahead.
