Richmond Braces for Significant Snowfall: Winter Storm Warning Issued

Richmond, VA – Richmond and surrounding areas are under a Winter Storm Warning as updated forecasts predict heavier-than-expected snowfall today, Monday, December 2nd. WWBT’s First Alert Weather team has increased snow accumulation estimates by approximately one inch and declared tomorrow, Tuesday, December 3rd, a First Alert Weather Day due to potential icy conditions.

Short-range modeling indicates increased moisture, with about 0.40 inches of liquid precipitation expected for the Richmond and Tri-Cities area. With temperatures forecast to plummet into the 20s, the precipitation is expected to fall as dry, “fluffy” snow, potentially leading to accumulation totals exceeding 5 inches in some areas.

The National Weather Service has upgraded its advisory to a Winter Storm Warning for Henrico and the City of Richmond.

Snow is expected to begin falling mid-morning (after 9 a.m.) in Richmond, with a slightly earlier start time possible west of I-95. While the morning commute should be largely unaffected, snow is likely to begin accumulating by late morning as the snowfall intensifies. Moderate, accumulating snow is expected throughout the midday and evening hours.

“This system is likely to bring all snow for our viewing area,” said a spokesperson for WWBT, highlighting the rarity of a pure snow event without rain or ice in early December, particularly in Southern Virginia.

Roads and sidewalks are expected to become icy overnight, with temperatures dropping into the teens. This has prompted the First Alert Weather Day declaration for Tuesday morning, as hazardous travel conditions are anticipated.
