Assam Approves Land Transfer for Greenfield Airport, Education and Infrastructure Projects
Guwahati, December 8, 2025 – The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has approved the transfer of 3,000 bighas (approximately 992 acres) of land at Doloo Tea Estate in Cachar district to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the construction of a greenfield airport. This decision, announced after a cabinet meeting on Sunday, December 7th, aims to facilitate the Union Cabinet’s approval for the project.
The proposed airport will replace the existing facility at Kumbhirgram, which is a defense airport with limited expansion capabilities. In November 2022, the government provided financial assistance to 1,296 families living at the Doloo Tea Estate as a goodwill gesture. Concerns regarding potential job losses and displacement of workers, raised during the land acquisition process, have been addressed with assurances that no worker will be evicted from their homes.
In addition to the airport project, the cabinet approved several other significant initiatives:
- Land Allotment: 1,200 families will receive land under the Mission Basundhara scheme.
- Engineering College Project: A joint aerospace and defense project will be established at Assam Engineering College in partnership with Dassault Systems India Pvt Ltd., costing ₹243 crore, with Dassault Systems investing ₹200 crore.
- Sainik School: Assam’s second Sainik School will be constructed at Longvaku in Karbi Anglong district at a cost of ₹335 crore, with 80% of the funding from the Ministry of Defence.
- Infrastructure: Compensation was approved for 884 families impacted by the construction of the four-lane National Highway in Dima Hasao district.
- Logistics Policy: The Assam Logistics and Warehousing Policy, 2025, was approved to transform Assam into a major logistics hub.
- Education: Assam’s history and geography will become compulsory subjects in classes 6, 7, and 8, following recommendations from a high-level committee.
These decisions underscore the Assam government’s commitment to infrastructure development, education, and economic growth.
